HAIR TRANSPLANT

ABOUT

cs-hair2Most of us take a thick head of hair for granted, that is, until it is gone. For many encountering this problem, the solution would be hair transplant procedures which can help bring back the appearance of a fuller head of hair.

During a hair transplant, hairs are moved from an area of thick growth to bald areas. First, you will be administered with local anaesthetic to numb the scalp and if necessary, medication for relaxation. Your scalp will be thoroughly cleansed.

Then using Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method, healthy hair follicles will be directly removed from the scalp and grafted one-by-one into the bald areas of the head. This method ensures excellent hair volume and quality as hair with intact roots is transplanted.

The FUE method does not result in linear scarring like strip transplants where a whole chunk of skin is removed and grafted elsewhere. With FUE, individual hairs are taken from the sides and back of the head to be implanted individually into balding areas. This results in natural permanent hair transplant that is unaffected by hair loss/ male hormones and the procedure is totally simple and painless.

If you are bothered by thinning hair or balding, hair transplantation can significantly improve your appearance and self-confidence. However, it is important to understand that hair transplantation is a permanent way to restore your hair, therefore expect up to six months to see results as the newly transplanted hair goes through the normal cycle of hair growth.

At Beverly Wilshire Medical Centre, we will ascertain the success of your hair transplant surgery so that you will have healthy beautiful hair again. Make an appointment with us for a professional assessment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What is Hair Transplant?

It is a simple procedure where the doctors will transplant hair from areas that are not affected with hair loss to an area that you need hair.

  • Why Hair Transplant?

It is the ONLY way to treat hair loss permanently with life-long results.

  • What is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a permanent solution to baldness using the technology in hair transplantation. There are minimal scarring, short down time, and no pain.

The hair follicles from the back of the head are transplanted to bald areas in front. The hair follicles at the back of the hair are more resistant to the hormone changes that cause the loss of hair follicles in the front. The procedure is performed under LA and involves extraction of hair follicle from back of the head. Follicular hair units with 1-3 hair are then implanted into the bald areas using our very own specialised extractor.

  • What does it involve?

Unlike strip transplants, where whole chunks of skin are removed and grafted elsewhere, with FUE individual hairs are taken from the sides and back of the head and are implanted individually into the patient’s balding areas.

  • Why FUE?

    • Transplanting hair with roots intact ensures hair survival with excellent hair volume and quality
    • Does not result in linear scarring like strip transplant (also known as Follicular Unit Transfer (FUT))
    • Natural results

  • Is it painful?

No, because it is perform under local anesthesia. Patient can even listen to music or read a book if they want to.

  • What does the patient need to do before the procedure?

If you have large amounts of white hair (more than 50%) it is recommended to use a short lasting hair dye and dye the hairs black or dark brown 1-2 days prior to the surgery to allow a distinct view for the specialist between the hairs and scalp.

  • How long does it take to do the FUE procedure?

It depends essentially on the number of grafts to be transplanted, for 1,000 to 1,500 hairs, the procedure can day all day about 6 to 8 hours. So the whole day will be scheduled as a day care procedure.

  • How much hair can be transplanted and are several sessions required?

The doctor is the only one able to determine, depending on the stage of development of the baldness in men or alopecia in women, how many grafts must be transplanted. Every case is specific. 400 grafts (around 1,000 hairs) to 1,600 grafts (around 4,000 hairs) may be grafted in a single or several successive sessions. Two to three sessions may be necessary to cover extensive baldness.
  • Can the patient resume normal activities immediately after the transplantation?

Starting the morning after the procedure, the patient can take a shower, go to work and resume all normal activities (except for sports for a few days, naturally, even a few weeks for certain rough sports). However, the patient cannot wash hair for 3 days or as instructed by the doctor.

  • How long after hair transplantation does the hair begin to grow back?

All or part of the transplanted hair risks falling out during the days following the procedure, which is perfectly normal. Since they only grow about 1 cm a month, as all hair does, the aesthetic result cannot be truly satisfactory until after 5 to 6 months.

  • Would patients need to take any hair cream or hair tonic to promote faster hair growth after transplant? Do they help?

Not required, but patient can continue Finasteride.

  • Can patient dye hair after hair transplant?

Only after minimum of 1 month.

  • Is the result permanent?

Yes, the transplanted hair will not be affected by the hair loss/ male hormones.

  • Can females do hair transplantation?

Yes, as long as women’s hair loss is concentrated in defined areas like in classic male pattern baldness (ie: women’s hair loss cannot be too diffused or thin throughout the entire scalp.

  • Am I suitable? Have I got enough hair to transplant?

Please make an appointment for a consultation for a professional assessment.
